We had a beautiful weekend. Sunny and warm in the 20°s. However we had only about an inch of snow on the ground. The school children are restive. The little ski hill with its rope tow behind the school building has been open only once this entire winter. No snow.
After weeks of dark skies, freeze-thaw temperatures, and no white stuff to play in, the general mood is cranky. Most local ski races and events have had to be canceled. Work has frequently stopped on the ice castle built every winter in the neighboring town for Winter Carnival as the ice blocks have melted.
A few days ago it was below zero. Yesterday it soared to 40 degrees. The farm driveway looked like April, soft and rutted with mud. The thin snow ebbed from the fields, exposing the brown, dead turf.
What a strange winter this has been.
