The Watched Pot

This photo of Blackberry was taken yesterday morning. She’s taking on roughly a diamond shape. Her distended sides are practically pointy.

I decided that if I didn’t drive down to check on her yesterday evening, she’d be sure to lamb last night.

Nope.

Sigh. Five more days before we leave. Seven more pregnant ewes. What a nightmare.

Hi Selden! How long are you going to be gone? Our ewes are due March 15-25 and are look exactly like Blackberry. I know they have at least two more weeks to go. Is there anybody that can check the ewes and tend things while you’re gone? I think you’re going to need coverage. I wish I was closer!!!

Hi Kim: Blackberry and Lily do look uncomfortably ready to pop, but I guess it’s possible I am being fooled because the girls are shorn before lambing, which has not happened before (usually my lambs come in early February and I wouldn’t like to shear in January when we have stretches of 30 below zero). Because we are driving to FL, we will be gone a little longer than usual: March 7-23. I have a young man taking care of the barn, feeding, mucking stalls, and checking. His mother is my dear friend Alison, who will be the immediate backup. Though she’s not a sheep person, she is a great nurse and a barn person (she prefers horses!) and can figure anything out. Moreover her husband, Tom, grew up on a dairy farm. Beyond them, I am going to ask a friend who has sheep a mile down the road to be on call to band tails and ear tag. I think it will work out but I am deeply embarrassed that my miscalculations have led to the necessity. NEVER AGAIN!

Hi Selden, OMG, Blackberry looks uncomfortable! You definitely NEED this vacation.,,.the lambs will come whether you’re there or not. You have a knowledgeable backup crew covering for you so you and Lucy enjoy this vacation. Things in life unfortunately happen which you cannot control and last summer was one of them.

    Florida here you come!!!
