Saturday was Lucy’s graduation from the boarding school at which DH and I met in 1983. It was an emotional day. I am grateful to the friends who had the presence of mind to take photographs, as I was winking back tears all morning.
In the photo above, Lucy is at the podium thanking her teachers.

The graduates were introduced one by one by their faculty advisors. As the student who had been there the longest, Lucy was last.
After his speech about her achievements, Lucy’s advisor presented her with a photo of herself and him ground-driving a horse. The horse had paused to pee. Her advisor instructed Lucy to hang this photo on her dorm wall in her next school, to remind herself where she came from. (He told her later that he would give her a non-peeing photo to substitute in the frame if her nerve failed.)

Jon was home to see his little sister graduate.
It was a beautiful, bittersweet day.
